It took 65 years for Chelsea to win our first FA Cup and another 27 to make it two. No longer strangers to silverware, club historian Rick Glanvill and statistician Paul Dutton take aim for FA Cup no. 4..
Rick begins his preview by tuning up.
In the mid-1930s, the music hall artist Norman Long ('a song, a smile, and a piano') felt moved to compose a ditty based on the unlikelihood of Chelsea ever winning the cup - there was only one back then.
Chelsea were one of the biggest clubs in England at the time with attendances regularly topping 55,000 at the Bridge and some of the country's greatest footballers in its squad.
But the club had a reputation for underachievement, and Long ridiculed the Pensioners by imagining all the things that would take place if the impossible actually happened on 'The Day That Chelsea Went And Won The Cup'.
'All folks and things were opposite to what they really are,' he sang, 'and the happenings were really most absurd.'
So in his dream lawyers won their cases and waived all fees, a pigeon hatched a guinea pig and blamed it on the cat, and the notoriously tight Harry Lauder used a five pound postal order to stop his shoes rubbing. In other words, the natural order of things was all to cock.
Every January for decades a café owner in Swiss Cottage used to place a sign outside his premises saying, 'Free dinner for all our customers when Chelsea win the Cup'.
It wasn't till 1970 that Long's fantasy became reality. By then he had gone and the café was kaput. Chelsea were no longer a joke, though, and somehow the world kept on spinning.
Even now there lingers a sense that a successful Chelsea is not part of the usual way of things in football. There is denial and resentment and a desire to depict us as football's sudden upstarts.
In truth, Chelsea have a 92-year history of reaching cup finals and, in recent years at least, a great deal of success. In the last ten years the Blues have won the FA Cup as many times as United: twice. You wouldn't think so by the coverage to date.
This will in fact be our eighth final tie appearance since 1915 and we are looking to even up the wins and losses columns. To date it is 3-4 in favour of the negative.
Admittedly, United's record is far better over time: this will be their 18th final, and they've been victorious in eleven.
We remember plenty about the 'Elleray Final' of 1994 - the rain, the second, hotly-disputed penalty, the shot-that-hit-the-bar, the rain, the scoreline, the United 'double'. Especially the rain.
And in fact Chelsea have only beaten United once in this tournament in eight attempts. That was in 1950, an interesting time for the two clubs. Chelsea had been in the top flight for 20 years, United 12; we'd never won the League, they hadn't since 1911. Two teams very much on the up, buoyed by shrewd buys and investment in youth schemes, met on 6 March for a quarter-final.
More than 70,000 watched at Stamford Bridge, the gates having closed half an hour before kick-off. Roy Bentley was magnificent, directing the traffic between wingers Bobby Campbell and Billy Gray, and Ken Armstrong shackled United's dangerous inside-forwards.
Chelsea had started in a frenzy and Campbell completed a sharp passing move after six minutes for the first. United rallied in the second half but with 20 minutes to go Gray's cute back-heel found Bentley in space and his shot rocketed past goalkeeper Crompton.
A 2-0 win took us to our sixth semi-final in the competition where, after an unforgettable 2-2 draw and a replay we lost out to Arsenal.
Oddly, our two teams haven't met in the FA Cup since March 1999 at Old Trafford, when Paul Durkin dismissed Roberto Di Matteo and the ten men held out doggedly for 0-0. A weakened Chelsea disappointingly lost the replay 0-2 in London.
We've met in knockouts just once in the José Mourinho era, in January 2005. The second leg victory by 2-1 courtesy of Frank Lampard and Damien Duff's goals took us to the Carling Cup final - and inflicted the first-ever domestic semi-final defeat on Sir Alex Ferguson in 19 matches over 15 years.
Mourinho has lost to his United counterpart only once in eight clashes.
There are other footnotes of history to aspire to in this game. Chelsea are looking to join a select band of clubs to win the FA Cup and League Cup in the same season. Only Arsenal in 1993 and Liverpool in 2001 have so far achieved the feat.
There have been five other occasions when the same club has appeared in both major domestic finals. Four of them triumphed in one cup and lost the other: Tottenham 1982, Manchester United 1983 and 1994, and Everton in 1984. In 1997, Middlesbrough lost both - one of them of course to Chelsea.
The two teams in this final are finely matched. There can always be a moment of magic or misjudgement in any final that proves the tipping point, and the return of Joe Cole and (hopefully) Arjen Robben means the conjurors who have been absent most of the season can wield their wands.
Chelsea's injuries now are obvious. What is less visible is the impact absences over the season have had on those who have been fit. Six Chelsea players have played more than 50 games this season.
If you count the number of games in all competitions missed by Chelsea's six most absent players - Joe Cole 38, Cech 27, Robben 25, Terry 18, Cudicini 14, Shevchenko 11 - you have the incredible total of 133 appearances lost over the season. All of them are key figures, too. United's stars have missed nothing like that number.
Perhaps none of that will count on Saturday at 3pm. Manchester United have their 'double' to chase, Chelsea, the last team to win the trophy at the old ground in 2000, will want to be the first team to ring in the new. José Mourinho will be hungry for a prestigious trophy that he has not yet won.
It could be a classic. Think second-half comeback versus Spurs, or Michael Ballack's 109th minute goal against Blackburn. And if, as we fully expect, this remarkable Chelsea team wins, don't expect the world to turn bonkers afterwards.
CHELSEA V MANCHESTER UNITED - Paul Dutton thumbs through the records as the nation's top two raise the curtain on a new era.

Chelsea played the last FA Cup final at Wembley against Aston Villa in 2000. The matchday programme, incidentally, cost £10. For Saturday's first Cup final at the new Wembley the programme will also cost a tenner.
Our record against United in the FA Cup is not good. Man Utd have won eight of the nine previous ties.

Our previous FA Cup final encounter
United had already won the Premiership with 92 points from 42 games. Chelsea had achieved the double over the Red Devils with two Gavin Peacock goals in two single goal victories. We finished fourteenth.
For the ticket allocation in 1994 the FA used a calculation based on average home attendances over the previous four years. Man Utd averaged 41,865, Chelsea 19,872. United were given 26,319 tickets for the final and Chelsea 18,743. 34,000-odd went to the 'football family'. The attendance was 79,634.
Manchester United striker Louis Saha has been ruled out of the FA Cup final against Chelsea with a knee injury.
Saha has failed to overcome a knee problem to play.
United right-back Gary Neville has been ruled out with an ankle injury, while Chelsea are without Michael Ballack, Ricardo Carvalho and Andriy Shevchenko.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho also lamented his lack of players and also has doubts over Ashley Cole, Jon Obi-Mikel and Arjen Robben.
Mourinho suggested he may have to play keeper Hilario up front if his injury problems continued but it is more likely to use Israeli youngster Ben Sahar.
United counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to have central defender Nemanja Vidic back to partner Rio Ferdinand at the back.
Vidic returned in the second leg 3-0 loss at AC Milan after breaking a collarbone.
The Serbian played in the derby win at Manchester City when United clinched the title before sitting out the draw at Chelsea and the final game of the season in the defeat by West Ham.
Saha's absence opens the door for Alan Smith or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to play a prominent role.
"Louis is out," said Ferguson.
"He picked up the knee injury in Milan and we did another scan on Monday to identify the problem more clearly."
CHELSEA against Manchester United is a fitting fixture with which to end the domestic season, but it's only the third time in history that the leading two clubs in the League have graced the FA Cup final.
In 1913, Aston Villa beat the champions Sunderland 1-0, and in 1986 champions Liverpool did the League and FA Cup double, in beating their Merseyside rivals and League runners-up Everton 3-1.
Having spent the Premiership season chasing Manchester United, Chelsea are looking to the FA Cup to compensate for surrendering their League crown to the Red Devils.
The Londoners were the last club to win the FA Cup final at the old Wembley in 2000 and are keen to be the first to lift the silverware at the magnificent new structure, built at a cost of more than £750 million.
Seven years ago, Chelsea beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the end-of-season showpiece with a goal from Roberto Di Matteo.
The same player scored the fastest goal in Wembley Cup Final history three years earlier, when his strike after 43 seconds led to a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough.
It wasn't so clear cut in 1970 as the final went to a replay.
The original tie, played on a disgraceful surface that had earlier hosted the Horse of the Year Show, ended 2-2 after 120 minutes. Chelsea prevailed 2-1 in the replay at Old Trafford.
Peter Osgood ensured he scored in every round, and David Webb won it in extra time. The west Londoners qualified for the final only once in the six years it was held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
They lost 2-0 to Arsenal in 2002.
The FA Cup remains the only domestic trophy Chelsea have not won under owner Roman Abramovich and manager Jose Mourinho.
They go into Saturday's game in front of 90,000 and a global television audience on their longest winless run in the Mourinho era of five matches.
They ended the Premiership season with five draws, interspersed by the loss on penalties to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final.
This will be the ninth time that managers Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson have gone head-to-head. The Portuguese has the better record with four wins, one loss and three draws.
The defeat was 1-0 in last season's visit to Old Trafford when United ended Chelsea's 40-match unbeaten Premiership run. Chelsea gained revenge by clinching their second straight Premier League title with a 3-0 success in last season's reverse fixture.
This season's two meetings were all square, although the Stamford Bridge fixture was an uncompetitive affair as the title had just been claimed by the Red Devils.
Goalkeeper Petr CECH could well be celebrating an early birthday present should Chelsea win.
The Czech Republic international turns 25 the day after the final.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- MANCHESTER UNITED take on their free-spending fierce rivals eager to complete a first League and FA Cup double since famously completing the treble with the Champions League in 1999.
At the same time they would also deny Chelsea a Carling Cup and FA Cup double.
The Old Trafford giants are making a record 18th appearance in the FA Cup final, and are setting their sights on lifting the trophy for a 12th time, thus increasing the outright record they already hold.
Seven of the previous 17 final appearances were under Sir Alex, and five of those were victorious (1990, 1994, 1996, 1999 and 2004). Ferguson has won 18 major trophies as United manager and 27 titles in total in his managerial career in Scottish and English football - a post-war record.
While Chelsea eased their way into the quarter-finals with home ties against lower League opposition in Macclesfield, Nottingham Forest and Norwich, before dismissing Tottenham after a replay, and Blackburn after extra time, Manchester United have come up against Premiership opposition all the way.
They accounted for Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Watford at the first time of asking, and Reading and Middlesbrough after replays.
Their Cup run has produced 23 goals, 15 by United, whereas Chelsea's has yielded 26 goals, 20 by the Blues.
The Red Devils had dominated meetings with Chelsea in football's oldest knock out competition.
This is the 10th time they find themselves facing each other. United lead by eight wins to one.
Since Chelsea's solitary success in the quarter-finals in 1950, United have won seven clashes, six at the first time of asking.
They needed a replay on the most recent occasion, in the last four in 1999.
A goalless draw at the Theatre of Dreams was followed by a 0-2 success in west London when Dwight Yorke scored both. United's most important victory came in the 1994 final, when Eric Cantona was at his height.
The Frenchman scored two penalties in seven minutes after the hour of a match which had been level pegging until then. Mark Hughes and Brian McClair were the other scorers in a 4-0 triumph against Glenn Hoddle's side that completed United's first ever League and FA Cup double.
This final could provide Paul Scholes with a third FA Cup winners' medal after successes in 1999 and 2004, but Ryan Giggs could go one better, and become the first player to claim five winners' medals since Jimmy Forrest of Blackburn Rovers in 1891.
Victory would also give the 33-year old Welshmen his 17th major honour, which would equal the all-time record of Liverpool's Phil Neal.
The PFA's Player and Young Player of the Year and United's 23-goal leading scorer this season, Ronaldo, will be making his 150th start for the club if he lines-up for the kick off
